Co jest powodem tak olśniewającego pogodzenia audiofilskiego uwielbienia dla szczegółów z melomańską muzykalnością? Niska impedancja, minimalna masa drgająca? Jedno i drugie, a może ani jedno, ani drugie? Nie wiem, ale efekt jest zjawiskowy: subtelny, przestrzenny i miły dla ucha. Gdy mowa o przestrzeni, to takiej gradacji planów, cicho odzywających się w prawym rogu chórków dobiegających z głębi sceny oraz idealnej lokalizacji źródeł pozornych jeszcze nie słyszałem.

Czy chciałbym tę wkładkę na własność? Owszem, chociaż kupno samochodu było jednak pilniejsze. Air Tight Supreme będzie konkurował z takimi właśnie zakupami. Czy muzyka, którą daje, rekompensuje taki wydatek? Mógłbym kombinować, kręcić i zostawiać opinie w stylu „bardzo dobrze – trzy z plusem”, ale ta wkładka na to nie zasługuje. Tak, chciałbym ją. Wybitny przetwornik.

Air Tight PC-1 Supreme jest znakomita. Już po kilku sekundach wprawiła mnie w zachwyt wymieszany z zawstydzeniem. Mój dotychczasowy punkt odniesienia zatrząsł się w posadach. Trzeba usłyszeć PC-1 Supreme, by sobie uzmysłowić, czego brakuje w dotychczasowej wkładce. Nie słyszałem dotychczas tak dobrego, tak autentycznego dźwięku w swojej dziupli. Matko z córką, ale wkładka! W porównaniu do SPU dźwięk się otworzył; stał się bardziej detaliczny. Instrumenty zabrzmiały jak nigdy wcześniej. Nie mogę powstrzymać zakłopotania. PC-1 Supreme wymusiła na mnie konieczność przedefiniowania moich długoletnich standardów. Dziwne uczucie, trochę jak powrót do punktu startu.

Wreszcie Giovanni Gabrieli – „Canzoni e Sonate” w wykonaniu The London Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, zarejestrowane przez Archiv na historycznych instrumentach. Subtelna XVII-wieczna muzyka, która idealnie miesza się, w każdej proporcji, z upalnym popołudniem na Starym Mieście. Pan Matsudairy, konstruktor Air Tighta, musiał nawijać cewkę swojej PC-1, słuchając tych sonat. Wiedział, co robi.
Jeżeli istnieje niebo, wszyscy słuchają w nim winylowych nagrań na PC-1. Do tej pory nie doświadczyłem nic lepszego.

To po prostu cudowna wkładka. Tak, wiem, że zajmując się tylko najlepszymi produktami, najdroższymi itp. wydaje się, że łatwo jest coś takiego napisać. A tak naprawdę wcale tak nie jest. Nie dlatego, że większość hi-endu to ściema, przynajmniej tego, którym ja się zajmuję, a dlatego, że zawsze trzeba wyważyć „za” i „przeciw” i że zawsze da się zrobić coś lepiej. Z Supreme sprawa jest o tyle trudna, że to najlepsza wkładka, jaką do tej pory słyszałem.

Podstawowa wersja była wyjątkowo gładka i płynna, jednak teraz słychać, że z niektórymi nagraniami można się było obejść z jeszcze większym pietyzmem. Supreme gra wszystko w ciut cieplejszy sposób. Jest to jednak ciepło tego typu, o jakim czasem wspominam w kontekście zmniejszonych zniekształceń. To nie jest zaokrąglanie dźwięku, ani manipulacja barwą, ale naturalne ocieplanie się przekazu w miarę, jak tor staje się coraz bardziej przejrzysty, a dźwięk coraz bardziej zbliżony do tego, co słychać na nienagłaśnianym koncercie. Jeżeli w wokalu głoski syczące będą lekko mocniejsze niż powinny, to tak to zostanie zagrane. Nawet znakomita, dwupłytowa reedycja płyty Diany Krall A dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio, z masterem Berniego Grundmana ma delikatnie, naprawdę delikatnie, ale jednak, mocniejsze sybilanty.

To najlepsza wkładka gramofonowa, jaką w życiu słyszałem – taka, którą chciałabym mieć dla siebie i tylko dla siebie… Na pewno ma swoje słabsze strony, ale ja ich nie potrafię w tej chwili, tak na chłodno odczytać, przede wszystkim dlatego, że nie mam po prostu dużo lepszego punktu odniesienia. To mój błąd oczywiście, nie ma co do tego dwóch zdań. Dlatego też wszystko, co wyżej napisałem, to rzecz prowizoryczna, która prędzej czy później będzie musiała być skonfrontowana z czymś innym. Ale i tak warto Air Tighta posłuchać. Choćby, żeby wiedzieć, gdzie jest „sufit”. Proszę się jednak nie spieszyć, nie oczekiwać fajerwerków itp. Supreme zagra tylko tak dobrze, jak dobre będzie nagranie, winyl, gramofon i reszta toru. Niczego nie zmodyfikuje, nie uprzyjemni, nie podbarwi. Czy trzeba czegoś więcej?

Where a conventional pivoted arm is calibrated to be tangential to the groove at two points, the Thales design keeps the stylus tangential at all points. The manufacturer claims a maximum tracking error of only 0.006°. My subjective impression of playback sans distortion told me the implementation of the concept was on the money. The stage reminded of one of those board games such as Monopoly. The flat cardboard playing surface is analogous to the stage; the upright pieces that you move around on it are the instruments.

But it wasn't until the arm was mated with the Supreme MC that I "saw" the rear corners. It didn't happen with the PC1s.

BTW, I've occasionally heard illusions of similar accuracy at some very high-end dealer's showrooms, but always with analog, never with digital source. I wonder why that is?

I was gazing at a stage with such a high pixel count it was almost unreal. A flood of data was exposed, much of it on the micro side. Mass groups of instruments became parseable, i.e. you got a real sense of the number of heads in the first violin section. A secondary effect of all this fresh micro-level data was that instruments began to differentiate themselves in expression, i.e. a cello's dynamic behavior is different from that of a clarinet.

It was transparent like the Thales and the images were about the same size, but had more saturation and density. However, because the stage was more fully realized it was perceived as more spacious, expanded in every way (except the rear corners).

What fantastic string tone! It was sweet and warm, all of it cut from the same cloth, and with a consistent tonal color—and that color sure ain't grey! I, and many others, think the PC1s is great in this area, but the Supreme made clear by its absence there was a subtle, pervasive distortion imparting a mechanical veneer—and now it was gone! The Supreme enriches timbres, making wooden instruments sound more woody. The treble has a rounded edge, possibly a little rolled off, so it's not as incisive—but also not harsh.

Everything was done the right way. Most impressive was how the Supreme suppressed your awareness of the mechanical process and pushed down the hallmarks a reproduction.

Another chestnut I spun was Nojima Plays Liszt (Reference Recordings RR 25). Now this happens to be the kind of recording and music that can sound uncannily fool you/real, given the right playback gear. Let me just say bingo! The record sounds better than I’ve ever heard it at Casa Lindberg.

If you’re even vaguely interested in baroque music, Telefunken’s Das Alte Werk discs are always worth exploring: excellent performances that are, at minimum, very well recorded. One particularly delightful disc in my collection is Telemann’s Violin Suite and his Viola Concerto (SAWT 9541-B Ex), featuring Jaap Schroder on violin and the great Paul Doktor manning the viola. It’s very naturally recorded (no highlighting of solo instruments or inflating them to Godzilla-like proportions) in a somewhat resonant venue. With I Supreme, I got a spooky sense of the air or atmosphere of the recording space, which, of course, elevated an already engaging LP into a special treat.

Similarly, the Supreme’s retrieval of the club atmosphere that’s integral to Jim Hall’s Live! LP (A&M SP-705) is made me want to call over the waiter and order a martini. I could almost smell and taste the long past but fondly remembered acridly smoky and whiskey-soaked interior of a small jazz club. The Supreme simply takes this honest but not outstanding recording up another notch.

You may ask: is the Supreme’s performance improvement over the Allaerts proportional to the price differential? No. While the Supreme’s obviously better, there’s no way I’d describe its performance as more than twice that of the Allaerts. And, frankly, I would have been surprised if the Supreme thoroughly trounced the Allaerts. Remember, the Allaerts is an excellent cartridge in its own right and improvements at these levels are usually incremental rather than quantum.

But all in all, I’m thoroughly delighted with what I’ve heard. The Supreme is an ideal match for both my system and my listening biases. And it fulfills my objective of replacing the Allaerts with something that’s even better. As I said in upfront, I’m not able to demo a number of expensive, limited production cartridges in my system, so I had to make a quasi-educated guess. And I’m quite happy with my choice—which is all that counts!

No matter the genre or lineage of the vinyl playing, the SP-1 will give you an honest take and impress you with superbly life-like dynamics and deep bass—the cartridge demanded much from the bass response of my BØRRESEN Acoustics 01 Silver Supreme Edition Loudspeakers. For example, Side 2 of The Firebird (Classic Records/Watford Town Hall/LSO/Dorati) Side 2, with the mighty bass drum thwacks. Most fine cartridges will give you the effect, but the Air Tight will X-ray the performance, giving strike weight, initial bloom and decay. You get the size of the bass drum and the quality of the skin (and player). And most importantly, the central core of the sound. I heard this to excellent effect on my reference IKEDA Kai, but the Air Tight was better still (for a 3K premium).

Super fast transients are heard as you’ll hear a hitherto unnoticed instrumental detail darting out of what you previously considered a fairly murky soundstage. And the decay of sound is among the most accurate I’ve ever heard. Listen to the cymbal in the opening bars of Funeral March of a Marionette (Analogue Productions/ROH/Gibson/Bernie Grundman cut) to hear exactly what I’m hearing. The transients are unbelievably lifelike, but I think the player looks up and misreads a cue from Gibson and mutes the decay somewhat before Gibson intends. Something funky is going on, and it’s captured by the SP-1 with uncanny realism. It's about the best cymbal sound I’ve heard on my system while tracking all this volume and data to perfection, even from the inner grooves.

Piano is incredibly lifelike, with the weight and individual tone of each artist played back very impressively. Check out the Analogue Productions Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 with Rubinstein for a wonderful example—thunderous sound and coherent bass with his crystalline treble and every octave in between. Or the superb piano accompaniment and sound of Georg Heim on my rare CBS France Beethoven Sonatas for Piano and Violin. We hear great macro dynamics and slam in the “Kreutzer” and super nimble transient response from violinist Oehler’s razor-sharp bowing. The weight of the piano on the “Kreutzer” opening was perfectly conveyed in balance and bass heft. A rich, natural palate of timbral cues. The percussive action on Heims’s piano was exceptional. As such, the upper octave sparkled.

The Air Tight SP-1 MC Phono Cartridge is one of the finest I’ve reviewed and would be the star of any well-curated analog front end. It is easy to install and sounds sublime on many different genres of music. Yes, it is expensive at USD 12,975, but that’s the analog world we live in. If you’re a dedicated vinylphile and get to hear one at a local dealer, you’ll be forgiven when thinking of what you can sell to get one. It’s not quite in the same league as the ultra-expensive Analog Relax EX1000 I reviewed recently (and purchased), but it’s streets ahead of the fine Phasemation PP-2000 I lived with for a few years and better than my recently purchased wonderful IKEDA Kai reference—can you tell I’m a sucker for Japanese luxury carts? In any case, the AT is certainly one of the top moving coil cartridges available today.
