Just as with the interlinks, mere seconds after connecting the Unity Speaker Cables, they instantly felt right at home. Everything simply “clicked” into place. Just like the interlink, the speaker cable combines sonic aspects that usually stand on their own and often make a cable lean either one way or another. But the Unity speaker cable manages a rare delicate balance that leans in no particular direction yet also manages to inject the music with a highly realistic tonal shading while avoiding sounding voluptuous or thick, let alone fat.

Its bass is really superb: fast, articulate, robust, and neither fat nor lean, and the cables allow the deepest bass to develop more convincingly. Meanwhile, the cable has resolution equal to the best cables I’ve heard while avoiding sounding lean, dry, or analytical. And it has all the delicacy and refinement that one may crave without sacrificing dynamic impact. Okay, so the Unity speaker cables are superbly balanced, but that does not necessarily mean that they are also enjoyable, emotionally captivating, or that they can party. Well, trust me, they are, they sure are, and they sure can.

When I first listened to the Trinity speaker cable it was a solid improvement over the No.3 that I used before that, and as a consequence, it became my favorite cable for the next years to come. But now listening to the Trinity again after the Unity, it is very clear that we’ve taken a few steps down in the product catalog. The Trinity sounds considerably less crisp and robust, less precise, a little veiled, and less acoustically convincing. In a word, it is less expressive and less realistic. In all fairness, the Unity is positioned two levels above the Trinity and costs more than double, but the difference is sonically abundantly clear. And that is precisely how it should be. A word of caution: don’t listen to the Unity if the budget only allows for the Trinity!

Given the affiliation with Jorma cable being used in Marten speakers, one might assume a natural synergy but as I have sometimes come across, this is not a guarantee. In this case, however, as could be read above, the cables worked absolutely synergistically with the Marten Parker Trios.

But I was in for another surprise, as the cables’ superb qualities were not limited to the combination with the Marten loudspeakers. As soon as I moved my Magicos back in position and connected them with the Unity speaker cables, the Unity interlink and speaker cables turned out not only to work superbly synergistically with the Parker Trios but also proved a smashing success by further elevating the overall quality of the entire system.

With the Unity cables in my system, the sound was very transparent, remarkably natural, and had richer detail with slightly improved timbre accuracy, as compared to my reference ASI cables; it’s quite amazing that the Unity cables are a touch better regarding the already excellent timbre accuracy which I love so much from the ASI cables.

It didn’t matter what type of music I played; it all sounded superb. Whether it be chamber or orchestral classical music or Jazz. It just sounded better. The Unity has an extraordinarily natural sound that is easy to hear and it thrilled me with its unusual realism. It was like listening to live unamplified music. I knew right away that me and my bank account were in trouble.

The Bill Evans Trio’s Waltz for Debbie[Riverside RPL 9399], which was recorded live at the Village vanguard. This amazing recording sounded remarkably natural and the musical flow was unmatched and moved freely like a smooth operator throughout all the frequencies. And yes! I do prefer the vinyl over digital, especially on this recording. “My Foolish Hearts” was rendered beautifully with emotion and vitality. The realism was quite amazing and the ambience retrieval was extraordinary. The trio was in perfect harmony; it was absolutely outstanding and it was music to my ears. Bill Evans’ piano was absolutely stunning and had a wonderful richness with gorgeous harmonics. Scott LaFaro, who was one of the supreme jazz bassists, was amazing, unstoppable, and his virtuosity was just incredible. The cymbal work of Paul Motian was top notch. The cymbals had life in them, with delicate, sweet and very detailed information that lit up the room. I was transported back to the Village Vanguard in New York City in 1961 (Yes, I know I was an infant but you get my meaning). 

Listening to “When I Fall In Love” was absolutely breathtaking. It made me feel like I was in the Philharmonic Hall in Munich. The Trio was in motion and they were communicating beautifully. The timbre and harmonic structures were conveyed masterfully. The piano, drums and double bass were presented naturally and Keith Jarrett’s piano exploded with richness and a gorgeous presence. The brushwork of drummer Jack DeJonette was delicate and crisp and had vivid life. Finally, Gary Peacock on the double bass was articulate, organic and powerful.

Die klanglichen Auswirkungen, die sich bei steigender Qualität der Komponenten bemerkbar machen, ähneln sich, das liegt in der Natur der Sache. Oft ist eine tonale Entschlackung besonders auffällig, gut zu hören ist sie etwa bei Gesangsstimmen, deren Abbildungsgröße auf ein realistisches Maß reduziert wird. Ein weiteres Merkmal ist eine gesteigerte Räumlichkeit in Verbindung mit konturenscharfer Ortbarkeit der Schallereignisse. So weit, so gut, das ist keine neue Erkenntnis. Was mich aber ungläubig die Ohren spitzen ließ, war der Umstand, dass der Austausch meiner Kabel durch das Unity-Set all dies in einem Ausmaß verbessern würde, mit dem ich niemals gerechnet hätte.

Meine mir seit Jahren vertraute Anlage spielte jetzt auf einem neuen Niveau. Im Laufe der Zeit hatte ich sicherlich einige hervorragende Komponenten zum Test, die den Klang meiner Anlage in einzelnen Bereichen verbesserten. Eine derartige Qualitätssteigerung aller klanglichen Aspekte durch den Austausch von Kabelverbindungen habe ich jedoch noch nicht erlebt. Besonders bei akustischen Aufnahmen fing das Klangbild regelrecht an zu atmen – anders kann ich diese entspannte Natürlichkeit der Wiedergabe nicht beschreiben.

Aus Bequemlichkeit schob ich eine seit Jahrzehnten nicht gehörte Best-of-Zappa-CD in den Player … und wurde herb enttäuscht. Das klang fad, zweidimensional, komprimiert. Also musste ich doch das aufwendigere Prozedere starten: Röhren des Phono-Pres vorglühen, Nadel und Platte von Staub befreien und die Scheibe in Rotation versetzen. Der Diamant setzte sich angesichts der angepeilten Lautstärke mit saftigem „Tchopp!“ in die Rille und beamte mich ins Armadillo World Headquarter in Austin, Texas Anno 1975. „Do you like cupcakes better?“ Nach einem Diskurs über die Vorzüge von Muffins folgt ein sich immer höher schraubendes Gitarrensolo als Steigerung zum grandiosen Finale. So energiegeladen habe ich das, zumindest von der Konserve, noch nicht erlebt. Auch die zuvor erwähnte Beethovensinfonie wurde mit ihrer ganzen prachtvollen Gewaltigkeit dargestellt. Die Tiefe des Konzertsaals, die plastische Darstellung der Instrumentengruppen und Stimmen, die dynamische Bandbreite – jedes audiophile Kriterium war aufs Beste bedient. Bei einigen Stücken wurde, offenbar durch die Mitwirkung der Jorma-Kabel, meine Aufmerksamkeit auf scheinbare Kleinigkeiten gelenkt, deren Bedeutung innerhalb der Komposition nun erkennbar wurden. Mir war bisher nie aufgefallen, dass die Streichereinsätze auf „Streets of Arklow“ (Van Morrison, Veedon Fleece) für die leicht dramatische Stimmung verantwortlich sind. Auch Van Morrisons Gesangsstil wurde durch die detailreiche Wiedergabe seiner expressiv geführten Stimme noch interessanter dargestellt und war in all seinen Facetten noch besser zu genießen.

Das Sammelsurium meiner Haus-und-Hof-Kabel verorte ich im mittleren Segment meines persönlichen HiFi-Kosmos. Der testweise Austausch durch erheblich teurere Strippen bewirkte manchmal Veränderungen, wenn nicht sogar subtile Verbesserungen im Klangbild. Meist waren diese Nuancen aber nicht ausreichend, um den dafür aufgerufenen Preis zu rechtfertigen. In meiner Vorstellung bedarf es höchstwertiger Komponenten, um den Effekt von passend hochpreisigem (und wirksamem) Zubehör wahrnehmen zu können. Jedenfalls bis jetzt. Das Jorma-Kabelset hat diese Vorstellung gehörig durcheinandergewirbelt. Was mich zu dem angedeuteten Dilemma führt: Kann es sein, oder besser, darf es sein, dass eine Verkabelung meine gesamte Anlage derartig verbessert?
