Następnie włączyłem testowany wzmacniacz Engström & Engström i puściłem od początku ostatnią odsłuchiwaną płytę, Flamenco Pepe Romero (wydanie K2HD). W poprzednim zestawieniu zagrana w niesamowicie dynamiczny, płynny, przekonujący sposób muzyka, tym razem wgniotła mnie w fotel. ARNE, choć były to pierwsze minuty po pierwszym włączeniu tej lampowej (!) integry, sprawił, że wraz z fotelem przewróciłem się na plecy... Nie dosłownie (na szczęście), ale o ile wcześniej siedziałem w trzecim, może czwartym rzędzie na widowni przed sceną, teraz czułem się jakbym przesiadł się do pierwszego. Rzecz nie tyle w skróceniu perspektywy, bo wszystko rozgrywało się za kolumnami, tak jak poprzednio, ale w jeszcze bardziej energetycznym, bezpośrednim, bardziej fizycznym przekazie, w poczuciu pełnej materializacji zarówno muzyków, jak i tancerzy kilka metrów przede mną. Intensywność tej kipiącej emocjami prezentacji zapierała dech w piersiach!

Może to brzmieć jak przesada, ale wcale nią nie było. Gitara to mój ulubiony instrument, ten krążek należy do moich ulubionych, a przy tym to doskonała realizacja, więc tak intymny kontakt z tak intensywnym, tak przekonująco zaprezentowanym spektaklem muzycznym i owszem, sprawiał, że wstrzymywałem oddech (jak to dobrze, że to odruch bezwarunkowy!) czekając na kolejne uderzenie w struny, czy wystrzałowe tupnięcie. Te ostatnie następowały po sobie tak szybko, były tak mocne, jak chyba jeszcze ich nie słyszałem, nawet z mocnymi tranzystorami. Kurz z drewnianego parkietu, na którym wirowali tancerze, unosił się w powietrzu, atmosfera w pokoju zrobiła się gorąca, z krew szybciej zaczęła mi krążyć w żyłach, dzięki czemu mogłem darować sobie kawę.

Timo Engström w swoim mailu przytoczył słowa nieodżałowanej pamięci Arta Dudleya, który napisał o LARSie Type 1, że to być może najlepszy wzmacniacz, jakiego dane mu było posłuchać (wywiad z Artem którego udzielił naszemu magazynowi TUTAJ). Ja ujmę to nieco inaczej – to jeden z najlepszych, wzmacniaczy, których u siebie słuchałem, a w moim prywatnym rankingu ląduje bardzo blisko urządzeń Kondo, AUDIO TEKNE, czy Tenor Audio.

Zwykle skupiam się na mocnych stronach testowanych urządzeń – tak po prostu mam, zdając sobie sprawę, że ideałów nie ma i (niemal) każde, nawet te absolutnie topowe, mają jakieś odrobinę choć słabsze strony. W tym przypadku, pomimo starań, nie udało mi się znaleźć przysłowiowej dziury w całym. Nie znaczy to oczywiście, że ARNE wszystko robi najlepiej na świecie, a raczej tyle, że mnóstwo rzecz robi doskonale i razem z tymi „tylko” świetnymi elementami składa wszystko w całość, której nie potrafię opisać inaczej niż słowami MUZYKA i EMOCJE. Dla mnie to o nie właśnie chodzi w tej całej audiofilskiej zabawie.

Nie mam trzydziestu tysięcy euro na zbyciu, ale gdybym miał, to chyba nie byłbym w stanie oprzeć się urokowi tego urządzenia. To urok nieco inny niż SET-ów. Jest nieco mniej eterycznie, nie ma tu tej unikalnej delikatności i aż tak przekonującej namacalności oraz obecności muzyków. To trochę bardziej bezpośrednie, mocniejsze, niezwykle energetyczne granie. Nie brakuje w nim jednakże wyrafinowania, muzykalności, a umiejętność wciągania słuchacza w stworzony przez wykonawców świat i przeżywania wraz z nimi prawdziwych emocji czyni z niego jeden z nielicznych, absolutnie unikalnych wzmacniaczy. Czegóż chcieć więcej?!

Skoro bowiem sam producent raczył był nadmienić, iż nasz dzisiejszy gość dostał imię po legendzie skandynawskiego, i nie tylko skandynawskiego, jazzu a przy tym ikonie audiofilskich realizacji, czyli samym Arne Domnérusie, krytycznych odsłuchów nie mogłem rozpocząć inaczej niż od „Jazz At The Pawnshop” i poprawić „Antiphone Blues”. Przy pierwszym albumie mikrodynamika, nawet przy cichym odsłuchu okazała się tyleż wyborna, co wręcz porywająca a jej wersja makro- , która włączyła się do gry mniej więcej w okolicach „High Life”, ani na moment nie pozwalała spokojnie usiedzieć w miejscu. Za to na „Antiphone Blues” klasyczny opad szczęki zafundowała mi zdolność szwedzkiego wzmacniacza do kreowania wydarzeń nie tylko w wektorze szerokości i głębokości, lecz przede wszystkim wysokości. Może to i dla większości koneserów High-Endu oczywista oczywistość, jednak Engström nie tyle sam robił, co miał zdolność ukazania całej aury pogłosowej i wysokości Spanga Church. Uzyskaliśmy dzięki temu nie tylko w pełni namacalny dystans we wszystkich 3 wymiarach dzielący wykorzystywane instrumentarium, lecz również świetnie zobrazowaną kubaturę je goszczącą.

Z założenia miał to być kolejny test lampowej integry, który w dodatku – patrząc na rezydujące na jej pokładzie lampy, wydawał się być z góry skazany na dość kameralny i stonowany emocjonalnie repertuar. Tymczasem Engström ARNE jednym kopnięciem wywrócił wszystko do góry nogami. Z eterycznymi i słabowitymi SET-ami miał bowiem tyle wspólnego, co szyba z szybowcem, a grał jak leci wszystko i praktycznie ze wszystkim. Jaki z tego morał? Dość oczywisty, czyli zanim cokolwiek ocenimy trzeba owego czegoś u siebie posłuchać. Bez tego pozostają baśnie z mchu i paproci snute przez internetowych speców, którzy li tylko na podstawie zdjęć i własnej, czysto wyimaginowanej pseudo-wiedzy ferują autorytatywne sądy. Jeśli więc macie Państwo ochotę na bezkompromisową lampę a tytułowa szwedzka integra znajduje się w Waszym zasięgu, dajcie jej po prostu szansę i posłuchajcie w zaciszu domowego ogniska.

W podobnym tonie, mimo stawiania raczej na wszechobecny spokój, jednak pełen wyrazistości w prezentacji poszczególnych źródeł pozornych wypadł spokojny jazz Tomasza Stańki w kwartecie na płycie „Lontano”. To również powinien być wręcz wycyzelowany świat muzyki, z tą tylko różnicą, że narysowany na bazie wszechobecnej ciszy. To często są pojedyncze, wybrzmiewające w nieskończoność, zawieszone na nieskazitelnie czarnym tle dźwięki, czemu nasz unikający zbytniego kolorowania i zaklinania świata zniekształconymi słabowitą inkarnacją lampy bohater fantastycznie sprostał. Otrzymałem dostojny, ale wyrazisty w krawędzi fortepian, energicznie zaprezentowany, z dobrym bilansem pudła i struny kontrabas oraz świetnie zawieszone, podparte mocną stopą perkusjonalia, na tle których z pietyzmem wybrzmiewała trąbka naszego, niestety od kilku lat nieżyjącego już mistrza T. Stańki. To w dużej mierze był przekaz oparty na pojedynczych, świetnie rozlokowanych na szerokiej i głębokiej scenie sonicznych bytach, ale niewiarygodnie targających moimi uczuciami, co biorąc pod uwagę odtwarzający te muzykę system z lampą w torze, na długo zostanie w mej pamięci.

Mam nadzieję, że w powyższym tekście wyraziłem się jasno. Chodzi o to, że mimo zastosowania w układach elektrycznych lamp elektronowych, mało tego, rozkapryszonych 300B, wzmacniacz praktycznie nie pokazywał najmniejszych ograniczeń w oddaniu niezbędnego spektrum mocy pozwalającej poprawnie wysterować moje duńskie „szafy”. To zaś pozwala domniemywać, iż gdy do Arne zapniemy coś bardziej przyjaznego i dodatkowo okablujemy go gęstszymi drutami, w kwestii barwy i wspomnianego rozedrgania dźwięku temat będzie jawił się w pełni oczekiwanych przez Was kolorach. Jednak w tym momencie stanowczo zaznaczam, to co testowo udało mi się osiągnąć bez siłowego naginania rzeczywistości, przeszło moje najśmielsze oczekiwania. Podczas wpinania integry w tor bałem się dosłownie o wszystko. Od braku mocy w ekstremalnych kawałkach począwszy, przez bułę na basie, na przygaszeniu światła na scenie skończywszy. Tymczasem dźwięk nie tylko, że w odpowiednich momentach wbijał mnie w fotel, ale za sprawą świetnej wyrazistości dodatkowo tryskał tak ważną dla muzyki radością. Gdzie widziałbym naszego lampowego, w testowym wydaniu białego rumaka? Powiem tak. Jedynymi, którzy powinni się nad mim zastanowić, to orędownicy z reguły okupionej wieloma zniekształceniami i uśrednianiem dźwięku, magii lampy. Reszta jak w dym, może wpinać Arne w swój zestaw bez zbędnych obaw, gdyż na przekór obiegowym opiniom w tym wydaniu Szwed nie jest zimny, ani też chcąc zaprzeczyć owej teorii, siłowo przegrzany. Jest po prostu strażnikiem energicznego, jednak bez wycieczek w karykaturalność skrajów pasma akustycznego, grania.

The Arne Mk 2 handles music that more conventional tube amplifiers might not be entirely suited to with surprising ease. Heavy rock, played at pace, manic drummers with twin kick drums pounding out a driving rhythm against a murderously relentless bass guitar and a couple of electric guitar shredders? Not too much of a problem for the Arne which laps it up. As a caveat though I imagine that anyone who listens to this music exclusively would go the solid-state route but the Arne Mk 2 does a very respectable job nevertheless. Certainly it’s the amplifier’s freedom and speed of dynamic movement that is so impressive should you have a general taste for intense instrumental drive leaning you towards a system that can recover as fast as it delivers.

On more circumspect music it soon established itself as one of the most beautiful sounding amplifiers I have ever had at home. Those with large rooms and/or inefficient speakers may look at the 30 watt per channel output and wonder. I get that, but in a smallish listening room through a pair of Wilson Duette 11 speakers and some excellent cabling, sourced by the superb dCS Rossini streaming set-up it was entirely adequate volume wise. More important for me was that it proved quite epic in its stunning ability to bring the music into the room.

Listening to the desolate, windy openness of Bobby Woods and Les Deux Love Orchestra’s Wagon Train reminded me of a John Ford western where wagons and John Wayne move against a backdrop of an eternal Monument Valley. Evocative is the word I think and the pure atmosphere this amplifier can create must, in some part, be down to the pure excellence of those Takatsuki tube upgrades. Yes, the amplifier is fast and dynamically impressive but adding its ability to communicate the music through sound visualisations move it on to a whole new level. 

The power with which the Arne Mk 2 can deliver a loose-skinned timpani drum blow to the sound pressure level within the frame and to the senses is an unforgettable part of the experience. Creating an atmosphere is one of its very strongest points and it manages this across a huge swathe of music. It’s so thick you can practically scrape it off the walls.

Its control of instrumentation be it solo or ensemble and the uncannily natural way it has with the human voice are as notable as the fact that it always has space and headroom to spare. It never sounds hurried or flustered and growing tonally harsh is simply not in its repertoire and this is a large part of the reason why it speaks the language of music so eloquently and with such purpose.

This really is a beautiful sounding amplifier. It’s as simple as that.

The evening before listening I'd attended a live jazz gig with a quintet fronted by trumpet and sax, and the immediate impression the ARNE gave was of the same kind of live presence and immediacy, plus that sense of listening to real music. There's nothing artificial or 'show your working' going on here, and neither is there any impression of the stereotypical valve amp traits of the music being warmed over or glossed, nor any slightly noisy background to limit dynamics. Instead, the ARNE just delivers the music, purely and convincingly – at least within its limits.

This isn't an amp to throw its cleverness at you, but while maintaining that organic flow it also reveals high levels of detail and tight drive – forget all those clichés about slow, muzzy valve amps. Even with a familiar, very commercial track, such as Sheryl Crow's 'All I Wanna Do', from the soundtrack of the Sheryl documentary, [A&M/Universal/Valory; 00602445584369], the ARNE amp combines that good-time, slightly rough, driving mix with fine insight into Crow's vocal and the layers of instrumentation behind her.

Yes, for all that power – at least by 300B standards – it just about holds things together with Gov't Mule's magnificent take on Pink Floyd's 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' [Dark Side Of The Mule, Provogue PRD 7446 2]. There's a big, full sound and bags of live atmosphere, but there's always that feeling the amp might be teetering on the edge as the track builds up to full power.

Our sound quality score avoids the fact that this isn't an amplifier for everyone, whether by dint of its size, its heat, its price, limited output or demand on speaker sensitivity. But when it's good, it's not just good, but simply wonderful, and for lovers of small-ensemble acoustic-instrument recordings there's a purity and ease of music-making here that's hard not to adore. Could this be a truly practical triode-tube amp?

Right out of the gate I was impressed with the gorgeous midrange that one expects (especially from a 300B integrated amplifier); it was neither euphonic nor syrupy and produced the rich harmonic structure. The music flowed effortlessly; it was pure, open, and the sounds of voices and instruments had believable colors, texture, and presence with a weight and solidity that was remarkably natural. In my experience, if the amplifier is designed well, it will sound excellent regardless of the type of output tube that is used. However, I've used many amplifiers with different families of tubes, and what you hear will be influenced by the type and make of the tubes you're using. The Arne Mk2 produced the rich harmonic palette expected from tubes, while it delivers an excellent transparent window and purity.

I put on a beautiful recording of Mozart's String Quintet in D Major, KV593 Larghetto performed by Talich Quartet and the Arne Mk2 conveyed the masterpiece spectacularly. String tones throughout were lusciously textured and colorful, beautiful and faithful. The strings were reproduced very naturally with an organic sound without having to be too polite; they were very transparent, revealing layers of details and each instrument is displayed with a rich and full harmonic structure with palpable strings that were captivating.

The Arne Mk2 renders voices with a natural, palpable, organic quality. The sound was consistently involving. The Arne MK2's naturalness in conveying a timbre was also excellent. Listening to Annie Lennox's recording of "Summertime" from Nostalgia (Qobuz) was a treat. Her voice was reproduced strikingly as were her emotions. I put on Youn Sun Nah's gorgeous recording of "My Favorite Things" from Same Girl (Qobuz). I was startled by the intense level of purity, immediacy and solidity of her voice. My Lorenzo Audio LM1 loudspeakers projected her as if she were in the room.

The Arne Mk2's effect on my system's spatial performance was impressive.  Listening to Anne Sophie Mutter on Pable De Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen, Op. 20 (Tidal MAX), maestro James Levine conducting the Weiner Philharmoniker, was moving and powerful. The Arne Mk2 captures the full sweetness, warmth, and complexity of the orchestra's dynamic range. The soundstage was stunningly lifelike; it produced a three-dimensional and picturesque staging. It was big, wide and deep, an enormous size stretching beyond my loudspeakers which gave me a sense that my listening space was bigger than it actually is. The Arne Mk2 drove the Lorenzo Audio LM1s with power and authority without losing any of the integrity of the music and it was able to scale with realistic dynamic swings. From pianissimo to fortissimo, the system handled it all with exceptional realism.

If you read its technical specifications alone, this amplifier is far too expensive. On the other hand, if you take the time to install it properly and listen to it in an environment that suits it best, it’s impossible not to fall deeply under its spell. And why is that? I can only try to give you some of the answers. Because his power of seduction goes beyond words. And in all sincerity, in a society in which everything is planned, thought out and calculated, it does a world of good… The very first sensation that spontaneously springs to mind is that of presence, and more particularly the sensation that the musicians are there!

Not only does the Arne offer us an unprecedented vision of the density of timbres, but it also couples this value with a completely unaccustomed impression of binding. The recorded music flows uninterrupted, with an admirably orchestrated sequence of notes and impeccable transitions. In yoga, it is said that the sequence of postures is just as important as the quality of the postures themselves. The Engstrom family must often indulge in this discipline to have succeeded in developing a machine that makes recorded music so very human.

Listening to your records with this amplifier allows you to experience sonic beauty in its purest form, and of course with both ears. But how does sonic beauty manifest itself so that we can be swept up in its magic? Here, it’s through variety and naturalness. Beauty for beauty’s sake is a rather sterile notion. Engstrom understands this perfectly. In fact, it’s the simplest, purest messages that give themselves up to us with the greatest reluctance and difficulty. It’s impossible to cheat with a purely acoustic piece, a human voice, a piano alone.

There’s something very special about the way the voices materialise through the Arne amplifier. Once again, it’s all about the binding. It’s reminiscent of the lingering aromas you experience when tasting a wine. With Arne, the notes are stretched out, prolonged and savoured. Time seems almost suspended, because the way we experience music is completely different. Our attention is no longer focused on conventional criteria, because the machine forces us to reconsider the way we listen.
