Gramofonów może nie testuję aż tyle, co innych komponentów, ale i tak do mnie co jakiś czas trafiają, a ich wygląd/wielkość/waga często przekładają się na charakter i klasę brzmienia. Taurus bez wątpienia był jednym z najmniejszych (acz już nie najlżejszych), jakie w ostatnich latach miałem w swoim systemie. Muzyki słuchamy teoretycznie uszami, ale tak naprawdę oczy również uczestniczą w procesie odbioru tego, co słyszymy. Pewnie dlatego właśnie Brinkmann nie przestawał mnie zaskakiwać dużym, dojrzałym, pełnym dźwiękiem, takim, w którym niczego mi nie brakowało i który jakoś nie do końca korelował z niewielkimi rozmiarami.

Żadnej wielkiej, czy kilkupiętrowej podstawy, żadnych wolnostojących silników, dzielonych podstaw, talerz grubości 1/3 tego w gramofonie J.Sikora, a dźwięk swobodnie wypełniał mój pokój. I, jak już wspomniałem, zaskakiwał raz po raz potęgą. Czy były to elektroniczne dźwięki z krążka Dead Can Dance, czy też grzmiąca orkiestra z Nocy na Łysej Górze Mussogorskiego. Ten niewielki niemiecki byk (‘taurus’ to przecież właśnie byk) prężył swoje muskuły i grał tę muzykę z niezwykłą energią, rozmachem, a jednocześnie absolutnie swobodnie, bez śladu wysiłku.

Nie mogąc zapomnieć tego doświadczenia z początku odsłuchów, powtórzyłem je raz jeszcze już z lampowym zasilaczem (a w końcu raz jeszcze z Thöressem). I choć wcześniej nie wydawało mi się to możliwe to, po części zapewne za sprawą jeszcze czarniejszego tła, po części być może jeszcze stabilniejszych obrotów, a co za tym idzie jeszcze doskonalszego timingu, Noc na Łysej Górze zabrzmiała jeszcze lepiej, jeszcze bardziej energetycznie, z jeszcze lepszą kontrolą nad każdym aspektem dźwięku. To było jedno z tych absolutnie wyjątkowych doświadczeń, których dostarczają najlepsze komponenty/systemu audio. 

Łączy cechy przypisywane mass-loaderom, czyli dynamikę, energetyczność, wysoką rozdzielczość, świetne oddanie transjentów, z wyrafinowaniem, gładkością, spójnością i płynnością brzmienia częściej charakteryzującymi miękko zawieszone gramofony. Bez wysiłku tworzy wielkie spektakle muzyczne imponując rozmachem, skalą i przestrzennością brzmienia. No i, co jest kolejną niezwykłą cechą Brinkmanna, o tej długiej liście zalet zapomina się już po paru pierwszych taktach muzyki, bo wtedy liczy się już tylko ona i emocje jakie wyzwala w słuchaczu.

I, tak sobie myślę, że gdybym nie był dumnym posiadaczem J.Sikory to Brinkmann Taurus znalazłby się na szczycie mojej prywatnej listy gramofonów, które chciałbym mieć. Nie dlatego, że jest najlepszą maszyną, jaką znam. Są lepsze od niego, nawet jeśli wśród mi znanych nie ma ich wcale tak wielu. Ale niezwykłe połączenie cech fizycznych i brzmieniowych Taurusa sprawia, że to unikalny gramofon, w którego brzmieniu nie można się do niczego przyczepić. A nawet jeśli da się pewne elementy pokazać jeszcze lepiej, to albo kosztuje to dużo więcej, albo trzeba postawić na półce wielką i ciężką bestię pokroju maszyny pana Janusza Sikory, a zwykle w grę wchodzi jedno i drugie naraz.

To granie bardzo neutralne i naturalne, bez podkreślania cech szczególnych, a z ich rozwinięciem do granic rozdzielczości systemu. Mojemu jej nie brak, więc słuchanie tego źródła jest jak wejście na najwyższy poziom z dotychczas poznanych. Nie wiem, czy obiektywnie najwyższy, bo przez mój pokój przewinęło się sporo gramofonów. Zaryzykuję jednak stwierdzenie, że jeszcze nigdy przekonanie o obcowaniu z brzmieniem bliskim ideału nie przyszło mi w sposób tak naturalny i oczywisty. Po prostu się stało.

To zaskakująco wszechstronne i potężne źródło, szczególnie kiedy weźmiemy pod uwagę jego niepozorny wygląd. W końcu doszedłem do „Popołudnia fauna” Debussy’ego. Dałem się porwać barwom tej muzyki; uwieść harfie, obojowi i fletom. Znów przede mną powstawał wspaniały muzyczny krajobraz, a ja siedziałem oczarowany. W „I symfonii klasycznej” Sergiusza Prokofiewa słychać swobodę, lekkość, oddech, a jednocześnie piękne nasycenie barw dźwięków oraz wypełnienie nimi sceny. Żadnego bałaganu, nawet śladu roztargnienia. Czuć rękę mistrza.

Zmiana wkładki na Audio-Technikę AT-OC9ML/II przynosi oczywistą zmianę brzmienia; nie spodziewałem się, by mogło być inaczej. Dynamika i barwa pozostały. Klarowność i gładkość uległy lekkiemu zamazaniu, a scena – spłaszczeniu. Jednak o katastrofie nie było mowy i po chwili adaptacji znów podróżowałem w stratosferze dźwiękowych doznań. Brzmienie Opus-1 chciałbym na stałe zapisać w głowie, by pozostało tam punktem odniesienia. Ale wiadomo, że taka pamięć jest ulotna, a gramofon – jako złożony z kilku komponentów – to źródło szczególnie kapryśne i podatne na zmiany. Tym większe moje uznanie, zarówno dla konfiguracji zaproponowanej przez dystrybutora, jak i efektu osiągniętego z moją wkładką.

Taki jest Brinkmann Taurus. Używając określenia „czary”, nie miałem na myśli kuglarskich sztuczek. Nie chodziło mi też o efekciarstwo i granie na instynktach. Ten gramofon to nie czarownik, ale profesor i mistrz. Gra na pokładach świadomości i na zmysłach; na percepcji, intelekcie, na doznaniu i na doświadczeniu. Ujmujący skromnym i eleganckim wyglądem, uczy, jak głęboko można wchodzić w odtwarzaną muzykę. Brinkmann Taurus to wspaniałe narzędzie dla pragnących w ten sposób poznawać prawdę o muzyce i o sobie samym. A gdyby został?…

Audiofily oblíbená norská zpěvačka a skladatelka Kari Bremnes dbá o zvukovou stránku svých nahrávek minimálně stejně, jako o tu hudební. „Spor“ z výběru „Burmester Selection Vol. 1“ (2017 | nahráno 2001 | InAkustik | INAK 78041 2LP) má rytmickou, důraznou basovou linku a Brinkmann napříč sestavami poskytuje ultra pevný, utažený, přesně ohraničený zvuk, zejména s obdobně laděnými přenoskami Goldenberg. Nejsou tu žádné „vinylové efekty“, jako mohutnost, nadýchanost nebo velká vřelost a sytost. Basy nedominují, jsou zaříznuté, konkrétní a tuhé, fyzické. Jestliže máte rádi svůj gramofon bublavý a šťavnatě okouzlující, tak raději jinde – zde je místo jen pro to, co bylo zachyceno do záznamu.

To vlastně platí i ve středním pásmu. Když jsme poslouchali starou, ale přesto skutečně hezkou nahrávku „Day-O“ Harryho Belafonta („Calypso“ | 2017 | nahráno 1956 | WaxTimeRecords | 772215), nadchla nás vysoká transparentnost systému (takže víte, že jde o starou nahrávku s jistými limity), parádní vzdušnost a skvělé rozlišení (pročež vytěžíte i z takového záznamu až překvapující množství informací). Hudba má energii, pevnost a přesto jaksi civilní, kultivovaně přirozený styl. Do středního pásma ani trochu nezasahuje nějaký mechanický hluk, tiché pasáže jsou prostě a jednoduše tiché, bez hukotu nebo šumu.

Právě strukturální pevnost v kombinaci s nerozkolísanými otáčkami stojí za minimem ovlivnění možností přenosek, též na nejvyšších frekvencích bylo v „Take Five“ (The Dave Brubeck Quartet | „Time Out“ | 2012 | nahráno 1959 | Vinyl Lovers | 6785403) všechno potřebné a chtěné, v excelentní čistotě a znělosti. Gramofon prostě zajišťuje, že přenoska a elpíčko vyniknou na maximum svých možností. Tady bylo naprosto jednoduše slyšel rozdíly mezi oběma osazenými přenoskami a přesto u obou byla reálně perfektní textura, detail, pevnost i rychlost. Taurus drží jehlu v drážkách prakticky dokonale.

Nic se nerozsype ani při vysokých hlasitostech, kdy posloucháte dynamičtější hudbu typu „The Peppery Man“ Natalie Merchant („ELAC 95 Years“ | 2021 | nahráno 2009 | InAkustik | INAK 78131 2LP). Přestože místnost byla plná energie, všechno je saturované a rozhýbané, gramofon odvádí svou práci dál s bohorovným klidem, bezmála netečný a tím opět ponechávající klid na práci pro přenosku. Zvuk tak byl výbušný, živý, rychlý a utažený, neovlivněný mechanickou nejistotou. Dynamické vzepětí ve vokálním i basovém pásmu ustojí systém s naprostým klidem. Přednes přesto není prvoplánově efektní, nemá tu typickou mohutnost a měkkost, je svou přesností spíše k nerozeznání od špičkového digitálu – tedy čistý a přesný.

The thing about the Taurus is that it presents itself more like a purely electronic device in the middle of the reproduction chain that anything (usually more colorful) at either end. It reminded me more of the Esoteric E-02 phonostage, for instance, than any other piece of equipment I’ve reviewed. As with the Esoteric, I consistently had the very reassuring feeling that I was getting the most out of the groove. Balanced and brilliant. Deeply refined and quiet. Giant yet invisible.

This uncommon balance and stability here served all music, all the time. Tom Waits’ brilliant concept of a “live/studio” album Nighthawks at the Diner (1975, Asylum) was reproduced with an eye-opening sense of the audience and space. My notes regarding the BSO’s performance of Debussy’s La Mer (1958, RCA) were embarrassingly complimentary: “Complicated rhythmic lines easily, joyfully unfolded.” “All that density without feeling heavy. All the cues. All the texture. No after taste or residual damage.” “Spectacular brass!” “A complete, colorful, dimensional, living soundscape.” It’s almost as though I was enjoying myself.

Evenhanded brilliance. Just a breath of fresh air to listen to a ’table with seemingly no restrictions on differentiating dynamics and space. The Taurus feels both open and powerful, precise yet free. And that’s from way down at the bottom to way up there on top (frequencies, that is).

For the audio hobbyists out there, imagine the power and efficiency of a ported loudspeaker with the extension and purity of a sealed enclosure. The Taurus will recalibrate your expectations for the format if you haven’t heard something in its class. You’ll either be permanently wrecked psychologically for experiencing something you may not be able to afford, or you will be spurred on knowing that there’s so much more in the groove yet to be discovered. I try really hard to remain in the latter category, though packing up products like the Taurus to send back to the manufacturer does tend to put me in the former.

If I used the word neutral, I’d send everyone back to the safety of their camps, so I’ll just say that the Taurus disappears into the performance more without losing out on the engagement. No midrange push. More space. More a sense that you go there (wormhole) than they come here type of presence. Just as memorable, but it comes from a different place. Think of the Taurus as a big naturally aspirated V12 as opposed to an older turbo car with all that sudden (if delayed) accelerative force. Use that big V12 to power Jeff Buckley’s vocals on Morning Theft (Sony Music) and you are left with no other reaction than “Wow!” in the face of something so velvety and present. The Taurus marries big fun with big refinement as well as anything I’ve heard.

I’ve had some experience with other big, fancy, expensive turntables. Can I right now definitively tell you that any of them is better than the Taurus? No, I cannot. Can I say that the Taurus is the best turntable you can buy at any price? Come on. You know the answer to that. Of course I can’t. But the best direct-drive Brinkmann manages to combine love and appreciation in a way that few can, and it’s a clear step above the best $10k–$20k ’tables I’ve experienced, fully justifying its status as a reference. It’s one of the only products I’ve heard about which I have no reservations. I actually miss it.

As we quickly found out in individual testing, EMT's Pure Black impresses with its top sound, which reveals itself in pronounced clarity and three-dimensionality combined with naturally sonorous timbre. If you however think that the record player's impressive performance is mainly due to this specific cartridge, you are wrong. A Transrotor Figaro also benefited from the qualities of the Taurus with 12.1, so that the elegance and casual perfection of the titles of Lyn Stanley's fantastic sounding direct cut album "London With A Twist", which had just before been played by the EMT, flowed with almost the same esprit from our MC-scanner, which had proven itself in everyday testing. Per Figaro the Brinkmann also effortlessly underlined his class. 

If everything is done right, the Taurus and its Performance supplier, which we used for all crosschecks, will easily be on par with other turntables of the reference class. The Brinkmann always developed a special understanding for fine dynamic and tonal nuances, dabbing delicate details into his well-organized and diversified sound patterns with a sure hand and, depending on the music, offering a smooth and fluid timing.

The Taurus thus emphasized Helmut Brinkmann's instinctive feeling, who launched a worthy direct-drive counterpart to the almost legendary belt-drive turntable "Balance". And the RöNtII crowns his work of sound art by adding even more musical soul to the Taurus's immaculate body – listening to it thus becomes an experiences that will stick in your memory for ages to come.

Did I constantly think about how I could keep the Brinkmann Taurus in my system for an indefinite amount of time, sitting on that massive HRS platform, impressing me daily with its poise and command of every LP placed upon its massive platter? You bet I schemed. Perhaps that’s the reason I held onto it like a winning lotto ticket. Both hands, real tight.

As I mentioned in the review of the Edison Mk. II, this Brinkmann rig commanded me to play all of my most glorious and rare LPs, on the double, leading me to some of the most reward listening sessions in many years. Those heavenly three-dimensional low frequencies could pull out so much energy and detail from double basses, kick drums, cajons and pipe organs, allowing you to connect effortlessly with the human on the opposite side of the sound—one of my sonic priorities.

There was one bonus to using the Koetsu Urushi Black cartridge with the Brinkmann Taurus and 12.1 arm. I’ve always maintained that Koetsus are magical when it comes to relegating pops and clicks to the far boundaries of the soundstage, and this became far more obvious with the Taurus. When I think of audiophiles who shy away from LPs because they have bad memories of their neglected vinyl, I want to sit them down in front of something like this. The combination doesn’t eliminate surface noise, which would be a dumb claim, but you just don’t care anymore. It’s no more intrusive than the sound of your own breathing.

The Brinkmann Taurus gave me such a sense of a final word, however, that the music I was hearing couldn’t sound any better than right here. I’m not saying that the Brinkmann Taurus turntable is the best or anything like that. But as I walk along this audio journey of mine, as we all are doing, I’m struck with the sense that it’s going to be hard to imagine a turntable that achieves finer performance than this. Perhaps I’ll hear something in the future that surpasses the Taurus—it’s not even the top of the Brinkmann turntable line!—and I refuse to keep saying that this is the best, no, this is the best, no, IT’S THIS ONE! I feel like I’ve rounded a corner on my journey, however, and I’ve seen (heard) something I haven’t seen (heard) before. And maybe it’s a big highlight of my trip so far.
