No i jest kłopot. Boulder 1110/1161 to wzmacniacz, o którym… trudno coś napisać. Prezentuje tak szeroko rozumianą poprawność, że każdy gatunek muzyczny można skwitować krótkim: jest dobrze. Z tą uwagą, że owo „dobrze” to poziom, przy którym w zasadzie nie da się nic skrytykować. Muzyka brzmi tak, jak powinna.

W Boulderze solidne zasilanie, przezroczystość toru i ograniczenie ingerencji w sygnał eliminuje podbarwienia i ewentualne cechy własne. Pozostaje tylko jedno: dynamika, która jak na deklarowane 150 W jest zjawiskowa! Barwa wydaje się obiektywna, co akurat trudno stwierdzić na podstawie ciężkiego grania. Dopiero kiedy przejdziemy do rzadszych, choć nadal rockowych aranżacji, szybko docenimy duet z linii 1100. Mimo różnic między nagraniami, ich klimatem, ujęciami przestrzennymi czy kształtowaniem barwy docenimy precyzję. Każdy dźwięk ma swoje miejsce i czas. Nie wychodzi poza określone ramy.

Symfonika sprawia, że jednak cofam zastrzeżenia do przestrzeni. W sumie to nie wiem, o co mi chodziło. Może prosty popowy materiał, a jeszcze bardziej ostre granie wcale nie muszą przesuwać ścian? Bo orkiestra jest wyświetlona tak realistycznie, że widzę przed sobą salę filharmonii, nie soundtrack. A może się przyzwyczaiłem do bardziej efekciarskich projekcji? Nie wiem; wiem za to, że neutralność osiąga tu poziom bliski wzorca. To nie jest nadrealizm, tylko zrównoważony obraz, którego autentyczność odbiera się podświadomie. 1161 dysponuje mocą, dzięki której do słuchacza dociera energia ataku blachy, a nawet inicjacja ruchu smyczka.

W high-endzie znajdziemy mnóstwo spektakularnych sprzętów. Możemy nawet dojść do wniosku, że taka jest większość. Ale warto pamiętać, że im dana cecha brzmienia mocniej uderzy w pierwszym kontakcie, tym pewniej zacznie przeszkadzać po długim czasie. Producenci o tym wiedzą i mierzą się z tym problemem na co dzień. Jedni z nim walczą, inni celowo uwypuklają to i owo, komponując firmowe brzmienie. Boulder go nie ma. Każdy aspekt prezentuje na takim poziomie, że narzekać na niego będą tylko krytycy z niewielkim doświadczeniem. Zakładam, że podążając w górę cennika, będziemy otrzymywać coraz więcej atrakcji, rozłożonych proporcjonalnie na wszystkie kategorie brzmienia. Jeżeli tak, to chyba już rozumiem wyjątkowość oferty Jeffa Nelsona.

Bas akustyczny z kolei to kapitalnie oddana barwa i faktura instrumentu. Rzecz w precyzji, a nie jakimkolwiek podbarwianiu – Boulder nie ma żadnych skłonności w tym kierunku. Dostajemy z nim to, co zarejestrowano w nagraniu i nic więcej. Większe niż w przypadku elektrycznego basu znaczenie miały tu długie, pełne wybrzmienia. I te 1161 potrafił oddać doskonale – jeden z utworów kończy się właśnie takim ciągnącym się niemal w nieskończoność wybrzmieniem nagranym do samiuteńkiego końca kiedy już bardziej czuć drganie powietrza niż faktycznie słychać dźwięk, a Boulder potrafił to tak właśnie pokazać.

Tak wierna prezentacja nagrań przyczyniała się do potęgowania wrażenia uczestnictwa w spektaklu, czy to zarejestrowanym na żywo, czy w studio. Tym bardziej, że całe pasmo pokazywane było w równie wierny i przekonujący sposób, jak jego dolna część. Średnica nie była tak aż namacalna, obecna, tak barwna jak z moimi ukochanymi wzmacniaczami typu SET. Ale jak to w audio – Boulder oferuje wiele elementów, których nie dostaniemy z SET-ami – w samej średnicy to kwestia niesamowitej czystości i przejrzystości, kapitalnej rozdzielczości dającej dostęp do niebywałej ilości informacji, ale gdzieś im również ustępuje.

Góra pasma z kolei była równie czysta, dźwięczna i otwarta jak z dobrymi wzmacniaczami triodowymi SE, choć jej charakter nie był może tak delikatny, czy „słodki” jak z tymi ostatnimi. Tyle, że gdyby był nie pasowałby raczej do całej niezwykle spójnej wizji wybitnie wiernego (nagraniom) dźwięku, która wydaje się być celem nadrzędnym dla inżynierów Bouldera.

Wzmacniacz 1161 kontynuuje tradycję niezwykle czysto, precyzyjnie grających urządzeń Bouldera, imponuje w zakresie dynamiki i doskonałej kontroli kolumn, serwuje kapitalną rozdzielczość i jest przy tym gładki, spójny i naturalny. Firmowy przedwzmacniacz jest jego doskonałym uzupełnieniem, ale jak pokazały moje próby, inni, mniej kosztowni partnerzy też wchodzą w grę, a doskonałe rezultaty można uzyskać nawet z niezbalansowanymi źródłami :) To kapitalny, bardziej poręczny, choć niestety nadal drogi wzmacniacz o ogromnych możliwościach.

The bass of 1110/1161 is incredibly fast, and even more hard-hitting than their 866 sibling. It has a combination of deftness and and speed that I have not personally heard before, from any equipment. Again, in terms of bass level, it is not bass light nor boomy and bloated, simply neutral, quick, precise, and hits like a Mack truck. The midrange of the 1110/1161 is very similar to the bass in terms of speed and neutrality. As mentioned previously, there is no real character in terms of added warmth or harmonic richness that you might get with some equipment. The mids are simply presented as they are, with the overall technical performance, detail, and speed that the 1110/1161 have in an overall sense. One thing I would really like to try out in the future would be a more “romantic” and warm tube preamplifier in combination with the 1161 amplifier, as I think that could also be a very interesting combination for a different flavour of sound. However, I think that as a solid-state reference pairing goes, the mids of the 1110/1161 are pretty much exactly how you would want them to be. The treble of the 1110/1161 is massively extended, and has great air in the upper treble, but is also not overblown or bright in any way. It walks the very fine line between a darker and slightly blunted tonality, and being too much, coming across as bright and grating. This lends itself to an overall extremely detailed treble region, which also helps transients come across as being quick and precise. 

Overall, my time with the 1110/1161 has been superb. The 866 integrated from Boulder was at the time the best amplification I had the pleasure of using and remains an incredibly compelling and excellent integrated solution. If the 1000 series is within your budget range, and you value neutrality, speed, and detail, I can’t think of anything I would recommend higher that I have personally heard. The 1161 does have enough power for most amplification uses, but if you happen to have a particularly hard-to-drive pair of speakers, there is always the 1160 as an option if need be. The 1110/1161 are both incredibly well built and look terrific (and I even usually prefer black gear!) Overall, I can’t recommend the 1110/1161 combination, and Boulder Amplifiers itself as a brand highly enough. Very well done Boulder!

If I received a big lottery payout tomorrow, I’d buy a full Boulder 3000 series system. It’s the most musically revealing gear I’ve heard in my journey as an audio consumer and audio writer. These are all six-figure components and worth every penny. But, they will remain out of my reach unless I have a major windfall. The new 1100 series is spectacular, in its own right. At $22,000 for the amplifier and $21,000 for the matching 1110 preamplifier, you could add your favorite pair of 10-20k pair of speakers a great source to make up a system that is close enough to what the crazy money gear costs, to live with for the rest of your life. And have no regrets.

Most importantly, you get the sonic virtues that have made Boulder a legend: tonal neutrality and freedom from coloration like nothing else, incredible dynamic range, and high resolution without fatigue or distortion. This fully balanced amplifier runs in class A mode up to 17 watts, (gently transitioning to AB above that) does a better job at disappearing than anything we’ve experienced. It’s so exciting that Boulder has not decreased the quality of their smaller amps, just the amount of raw power on tap.The 1161s 150 watts per channel never max out our Sonus faber Stradivaris (92db/1-watt) or the Focal Stella Utopia Ems (93db/1watt). These flagship loudspeakers deliver incredible performances with the 1161 in the amplification chain, and I couldn’t play them loud enough to detect any kind of clipping. Though the 1161 manual says that the white power indicator will briefly turn red in the presence of clipping, we were not able to make this happen, even playing TOOL at disgustingly (or invitingly, depending on your perspective) loud levels.

Sonically excellent as the 1161 is, most of its other virtue is underneath the top panel. The level of attention to detail rivals what you might expect from the Ferrari Formula One garage. (and, I’ve been to this garage) It’s no surprise that when you visit the Boulder factory, you see their biggest models being wheeled from one department to another on engine stands, in a spotless environment. Boulder’s employees are well trained and have been with the company for years, some for decades.

Nothing I’ve ever had the privilege of lifting the cover on in the audio world is built to this standard. This is what gives Boulder products the highest secondary market value of anything going – if you can even find them used. I’m sure people that trade Boulder in for something else are out there, but every Boulder owner I’ve encountered has only traded up. It’s rarely if ever for sale used, and I’ve never heard of one that has malfunctioned. I don’t even recall seeing a service area when I visited the factory, but I’m sure it’s there somewhere.
